The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Corporation (UMEZ) is an independent not-for-profit corporation, began operations on February 14, 1995, and made its first round of loans and grants in October 1996. The Business Initiative Corporation was founded in 1994 with the mission to support economic development and induce private investments in New York State by providing below-market interest rate loans and long-term capital to the business community. As a Small Business Lending Company (SBLC) non-profit lender, Business Initiative Corporation focuses on loans that create jobs and uplift communities throughout New York State. Business Initiative Corporation also has a special focus on the place it was founded and operates from to this day, the Bronx. Harlem Entrepreneurial Fund
The Harlem Entrepreneurial Fund (HEF) was established in 2007 by the Harlem Commonwealth Council to provide low-income and minority entrepreneurs with supportive loan capital and technical assistance in Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood, and the Bronx. Lending operations began in the summer of 2008, and HEF was certified by the U.S. Treasury Department as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) in 2012. Since its inception, HEF has originated 360 loans for over $9 million and helped create or retain over 650 local jobs.
